Dear Facebook I Don’t Care Who’s Peeping at Me

I don’t, I know that is a malware application  & I hit the report button on all these things.  I can usually smell a spam scam a mile away.  I really and truly have only opened one of these which made me feel like a total jackass and I don’t like that feeling.

If you have ever had that same jackass moment or you think you may have one down the road, let’s talk about how to get rid of this cr*p.

Jackass moments begin once you have clicked a link and then clicked “allow” on the link that opens.  Welcome to your jackass adventure.

The keywords to remember are these: NEVER CLICK ALLOW.

If you did have a dumb and dumber moment this is what you need to do immediately.  Click on account in the upper right hand corner and select privacy settings.  When this opens at the bottom left is a selection for “Apps and Websites” choose this please.

Your applications page will open and right there almost in the middle will be a choice aptly named “edit settings”.

Now comes the easy part – scroll through all the applications looking for the jackass offender and hit the X.

When you do this a box will appear, saying, “If you remove _________, it will no longer have access to your data and be removed from your profile, bookmarks, and Applications Page.”  You will hear the Allelujia Chorus in the background because Eureka this is what you want so say “yes” and get rid of the offensive nasty creepy application.

You should post a status update with a note of apology and perhaps a picture of you eating crow, and maybe a warning that people should really check things out and always remember those three little words NEVER CLICK ALLOW.

Thank you and come fly with me again.

  1. I’d say “Almost never click allow”. Allowing access can really open up a lot of features using the power of Facebook’s platform. There are plenty of legitimate websites.

Besides, I’m of the opinion that privacy is dead. We more or less live in an open society, and if you wouldn’t want your grandmother to know about what you said or did, don’t do it! :) The question I had to ask myself was: what was I so afraid of getting out? That I ate a hamburger last night?

So, I use the power of referrals to make my decision. If I’ve never heard of the site I’m on (and I always check the address to make sure it’s not a facebook clone), then I don’t click allow until I can back it up with friends’ comments or referrals from legitimate companies. That’s social media at its finest!

Thank you! When I wrote “never say allow” I was referring to the applications that most people should realize are shocking or disgusting or semi nude – not applications from websites you know and trust. I google, I factcheck.org everything which was my real point without calling anyone out for being an idiot LOL. I wish people would think before doing or saying things but they seem to think they are private on FB and that granny won’t see it. Since the majority of US FB newbies are old enough to be grandmothers they should be thinking.
